Ah Meegan I know nothing about this "friend" business, either on this site or any other and it just puzzles me still. I read that on Facebook the kids "friend" each other as easily as someone throws beads at Mardi Gras. I like my "friends" to be friends, and you had a good, practical response to my question. So sure, I'd be pleased to be your friend.
Meegan, thanks for the invitation! But tell me a little more about why I got it -- it seems to me all I do is act grumpy and hope someone will do something to make things better.
I WILL try to act like your friend if you start something. Then, if I've acted right, I'd deserve to be called your friend
Megan, since social bookmarking won't start until next week, I thought I'd give you some suggestions here. I did not use delicious for a long time because I did not see how it could help in my teaching. However, I soon figured out that it made it easier for me to organize the sites I might use for my classes (quite by accident, I was having trouble connecting through the links I posted on Blackboard when I was doing a presentation on social bookmarking. I realized that all the links I needed I had put on a demonstration of delicious. I figured going directly to delicious was much easier. In addition, I work between home and the office and I was now able to put everything onto one site which I could then access in the classroom).
Soon I discovered that I could create lists and my students could access those resources from any computer. So this semester I am experimenting with putting the resources up for my students.
Finally, I want to start using it with some of my colleagues that collaborate with outside of the area.
I think if you show them how useful it will be in planning their classes and conducting research, they will jump at the opportunity. Perhaps you can create some resources and send an e-mail around to have faculty access the lists on delicious. You can then follow up with a workshop on how to use it (once they have seen it in action).
My nephew is a freshman in the Construction Management program at Ferris (and my niece is a graduate of the School of Pharmacy program). I sent my nephew off with a computer full of links to resources such as delicious, zotero, and PBWiki. I'm not sure if he's using them, but it is nice to know that perhaps some of his teachers will be able to support his using these technologies.
